November has flown by. I packed a lot in. I can’t believe we’re so close to Christmas – things are only going to get busier in the next few weeks. Here’s some rad stuff I’ve been enjoying this month. Hopefully you can enjoy it too.
Stuff I’ve been doing
Somewhat predictably a lot of this month’s activities have revolved around good alcoholic beverages. I tried new blends and a new lager beer at Wildflower, I checked out the new Bucket Boys bar and The Sausage Factory. I also sat down for a chat with Chrissy and Jim from The Sausage Factory for a piece that will probably run early next year. I’ve been trying to write for the website but I haven’t been as productive as I’d hoped.
Probably the highlight of the month was Rootstock wine festival at Carriageworks followed by dinner at Automata. The wine was sensational, as was the food and the company. I picked up a couple of fun bottles for summer but my stand outs were probably Mount Edward’s Gamay (Central Otago), Shobbrook’s (Barossa Valley) Making Space pet nat or its sister, Poolside, or Brash Higgins’ Nero (Maclaren Vale). I also tried Daigo no Shizuku, a natural sake which was pretty mindblowing. It was great to see excellent beers at Rootstock too. It’s one of the best festival experiences I’ve ever had. The food was incredible and the wines even better. There was a real fun atmosphere.
After Rootstock we went to Automata where just hhhnnnnggghghhhh. Damn, it’s good. The squid ink pasta and prawn dish was unreal, as was the dessert. Being the son of a baker, the bread never fails to make me giddy with excitement, especially with THAT butter.

All of this has made me super excited for putting together the food and booze list for our Christmas celebrations. It’s going to be incredible. I can’t wait to get my hands on that ham from LP’s Quality Meats.
I’ve spent a lot of my time getting organised for Christmas, planning, shopping and generally getting stuff sorted. I’ve bought decorations (some for me, some for Cal and Meg). I’ve also done some gift shopping and posted some stuff back to the UK.
I went over to Callum’s one Sunday to get organised for Christmas but we didn’t really do much. I went on the Sunday because I kind of crocked my knee playing football and wasn’t up to it the following week. It’s affected my running too which has been poor this month.
I’ve booked tickets to see Seu Jorge and Gomez next year. I’m stoked about that.
Earlier in the month I caught up with Jordan for the first time in ages. We had a few beers in Newtown and went to Loaded by BL where I had a despicable burger.
Otherwise, work has been busy! I’m looking forward to some down time.
Stuff I’ve been listening to
I’ve been listening to the same old podcasts but also got into a few episodes of Quickly Kevin, Will he score? A podcast about football in the 90s. It’s funny.
I’m still listening to the remix EP of Alt J’s Deadcrush. I’ve had the Miro Shot remix prtty much on repeat.
Black Friday is tedious and Record Store Day always feels super hyped but the two combined and Sufjan Stevens released a 12″ single with Hotline Bling as the B side, so I obviously had to buy it. It came with a download code for the full Carrie & Lowell live album. I’ve been listening to that. It’s beautiful.
Stuff I’ve been watching
I watched plenty of iPlayer. Blue Planet 2 takes my breath away each week. I’ve been enjoying QI and Have I got News For You too. Louis Theroux’s Scientology movie is something I’ve been meaning to get to but kept putting off. I finally watched it. It’s disturbing.Cinema trips have dried up for me. It’s something I want to get back into.
I rewatched In Bruges for the millionth time. And I finally watched The Red Turtle. It’s a magnificent piece of film making with incredible artwork, sensational music and a beautiful story.
Stuff I’ve been playing
FIFA 18 now and again. I’m not really loving it. I gave Animal Crossing Pocket Camp a go on the iPhone. It was fun for a week but a bit boring after that.
Stuff I’ve been reading
I finished the latest issue of The Blizzard just in time for the next to come out. I’ve been flicking back through What to Eat With What You Drink and The Brewmaster’s Table to get inspiration for Christmas. I learn something new each time I read them. I haven’t read much online this week because I’ve been so busy. I have a list of beer articles and blogs to get through.
I read Alan Bennett’s Father! Father! Burning Bright. I can’t help but read it in his voice.
That’s pretty much it for November. I’m excited to crack on the Christmas music and movies soon. That will be pretty much all I write about this time next month.
