Stuff I’ve been doing – February 2017

Here’s stuff I’ve been up to this month. Hopefully something here stands out to you and you’ll enjoy it. If you have recommendations, let me know!

Stuff I’ve been watching

There was a wonderful Alan Bennett documentary on iPlayer.  If it’s still there I really recommend it.

Also on iPlayer was Classic Soul  at the BBC, an hour of live hits, mostly from the 60s. It was sensational!

In my attempt to get to the cinema more this year, I’ve seen quite a few movies (some on the small screen too).

Dr Strange was the most tedious action film I’ve ever seen. Intensely boring.

I saw Moana which was a nice animation. Passengers was distinctly average, it was ethically questionable and the third act was pretty poor. It could have been so good!

Arrival was incredible, I really recommend it. The Founder was a lot better than I expected and Michael Keaton puts in a good performance.

I watched Manchester By The Sea. It’s long and depressing and I was incredibly hungover while watching but I still loved it. It’s shot and written beautifully. I never used to like Casey Affleck but he’s better than Ben for sure.

I finally saw The Girl on The Train. It was alright, nothing that special. Avoiding spoilers, how loaded with irony was the murder weapon?

I also watched When Marnie Was There which is one of the most beautiful, moving and unique films I’ve ever seen. I adored it.

I saw Gold which was weird and kind of boring. I also stayed up to watch a Leeds game for the first time in aaaaages. We beat Sheffield Wednesday but I felt sick with nerves from the first minute to the last.

Away from movies, I’ve been watching foodie stuff on YouTube, in particular the channel, Munchies. It’s mostly been the Matty Matheson how to guides, but also some of the Chef’s nights out. My favourite was one in Sydney featuring some of the best chefs around and my hood. It’s ace and really showcases the great food in this city. But be warned, there’s strong language and adult scenes.

Stuff I’ve been listening to

I bought Atomos by A Winged Victory for the Sullen  which is super cinematic. I also bought reissues of Elephant by The White Stripes and Etta James’ Tell Mama, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On and Isaac Haye’s Hot Buttered Soul.

I’ve also been listening to LITE and Kafka’s Ibiki, while Oddisee dropped another free track from his upcoming album.

Stuff I’ve been playing

I’ve got back into FIFA recently, including the player mode in career. I really want to get into other games but nothing ever captures my imagination. Please send me recommendations.

I’m really tempted to buy a Nintendo 3DS but I probably shouldn’t. Kind of want to play Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario Kart… all the classics. I should just get one, right?

Other stuff I’ve been doing

I’ve been wanting to cook more but I have deadbeat housemates who can’t keep the kitchen clean. In my head, I’ve been planning out my dream kitchen, including all the stuff I want to kit it out with.

New places I checked out include Shark Island Brewing in Kirrawee, The Gretz in Enmore, Koi’s Dessert Bar in Chippendale, Fish & Co at The Tramsheds and a wonderful deli run by the friendliest people, Delizie di Casa in Surry Hills. I picked up some of the best prosciutto I’ve ever tasted. I also finally made it to Archie Rose Distilling Co and had a cheeky white rye, apple juice and bitters at midday. It was delicious.

I’ve also been loving fresh fruit since the weather has been so warm. Munching on watermelon or mango on the balcony while it’s roasting has been a wonderful little pleasure recently.

I finally used the chopsticks I bought in Ginza, to eat a brilliantly simple noodle soup I made.

That’s pretty much everything. I’m still enjoying seeing new films at the cinema and I kind of want to get back into gaming but my beer writing and running take up too much of my time. Let me know what recommendations you have.
