Stuff I’ve been doing – December 2017

December is always busy. In terms of the things I’ve been enjoying, it’s mostly Christmas focused so if that’s not your bag, there probably aren’t a heap of recommendations here for you. This is the stuff I’ve spent my time on this month. You might just like it too.

Stuff I’ve been doing

Grace arrived so that’s been the major thing happening this month. We’ve explored a bit of Sydney, eaten good food, particularly at the fish markets and LP’s Quality Meats. It’s been good.

I’ve been wrapping up work and I’m now on holiday. It’s a much needed rest and I’ve been sleeping more than I have in months. It’s kind of scary.

Christmas shopping has been a big one. I got gifts and decorations sorted pretty early on but it still took a bit of time.

I’ve been trying to get the website sorted to run through Christmas and New Year. I haven’t been as productive as I would have liked but I was in need of a rest from it. My running has declined and my weight has gone up. My legs are dead.

I bought myself some treats, including some Lark whisky which I jumped on as soon as I saw it was back on sale.

Christmas was spent at Callum’s and consisted of lots of great food!

Did alright this Christmas Eve.

Stuff I’ve been reading

I’ve been slowly working through Tolkien’s Letters to Father Christmas (which I didn’t finish) and briefly picked up Nikolai Gogol’s The Night Before Christmas but put it back down again. I will read it eventually. I started reading through Milk Made which I’ve wanted for ages and was kindly gifted to me.

I’ve also found time to catch up on some beer writing by Cloudwater and Good Beer Hunting.

Stuff I’ve been listening to

A lot of Christmas music. Just the typical playlist I listen to every year; a combination of classics, jaunty English folk stuff and Sufjan Stevens. I also discovered When The Thames Froze. Can’t believe I’d never heard it before. This will be my first Christmas in Australia so Tim Minchin’s White Wine in the Sun is particularly poignant. The Home Alone soundtrack and Dean Martin’s Christmas have been on the turntable regularly too.

I’ve been trying to get through podcasts. I think I’m going to cull some next year. I also bought Sufjan’s The Greatest Gift and got a free download of some live Alt-J tracks. I’ve been listening to both of those a bit too.

Stuff I’ve been watching

Christmas movies! Muppet Christmas Carol, Love Actually, Home Alone (1 and 2), The Santa Clause, Blackadder’s Christmas Carol etc. etc. I’ve also been working through BBC stuff including Have I Got News For You, QI, Would I Lie To You?, Live at the Apollo.

I was sad to see Blue Planet 2 end. It was sensational. I also enjoyed a few episodes of The Hairy Biker’s Christmas series. It’s a new one for 2017 and got me in the spirit.

I rewatched The Trip and The Imitation Game and enjoyed both as much as the first time round. I watched Adult Life Skills which was funny and touching.

I got round to watching Star Wars just before the end of the year. I’d heard a lot of people say they preferred it on second viewing but I don’t think I can be bothered to go again.

I caught up with some BBC Christmas specials including Doctor Who, The Highway Rat and a few others. Each year I watch Big Fat Quiz of the Year, it was a good one this year.

Stuff I’ve been playing

I’ve got back into FIFA. I’ve been smashing through Career Mode and I’ve been enjoying it again. I also flicked on Animal Crossing for the first time in a while. Seeing it snowy takes me back to when I played it as a kid and first got in on Gamecube for Christmas.

That’s about it for December. It’s been a good month and a good way to cap 2017.
