Stuff I’ve been doing – August 2017

August was a busy month but thankfully for the right reasons. I spent two weeks of it in New Zealand which was nice. Here’s a round up of other stuff I’ve been enjoying (mostly music, movies and magazines) over the last month in the hope you might like it too.

Stuff I’ve been doing

I spent a good couple of weeks in New Zealand. I covered that in more detail here (includes photos). There were also a heap of photos on my Instagram. I took in some great views and ate some incredible food.

Before that I was pretty much crazy busy with work, and with writing for the website and planning the holiday in my spare time. Not much really happened until I went away.

Earlier in the month I revisited LP’s Quality Meats with Callum and Megan. It was as rad as ever. That beef short rib is insane and it was awesome discovering nduja having not had it before. Runny salami or chunky pate?

Stuff I’ve been listening to

Mostly the usual list of podcasts but also Arcade Fire’s Everything NowJames Vincent McMorrow’s True Care, Relaxer by Alt J and the Dunkirk soundtrack. The latter adding unnecessary tension to take off and landing on my flights around New Zealand.

I listened to Everything Now a bit last month when it came out and I liked it quite a bit at first, listening to it back to back. Since then I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a bit weird. Good but pretty strange. It’s like a snapshot of various genres over the decades. It has a bit of everything (maybe that’s what the title’s about). It’s like all the Now That’s What I Call Music albums together, a journey through the Christmas number ones of the last 40 years.

Otherwise I picked up a copy of Pulp’s Separations in Auckland, as well as an NZ pressing of Horses by Patti Smith, and a US pressing of Innervisions by Stevie Wonder. I also got a Christmas album by The Temptations which will be put away for a few months.

I haven’t had a chance to listen to all of these yet so perhaps I shouldn’t include them but you probably know they’re awesome albums anyway.

Stuff I’ve been watching

I watched Land of Mine on the plane back to Sydney. It was pretty brutal but definitely worth watching. Otherwise I’ve been watching the Sydney Swans where I can but missed a couple of games when I was in New Zealand. Before I went away I watched Alone in Berlin which was decent.

I finally got round to watching I, Daniel Blake. I’d been waiting for a time when I was really in the mood for it because I love Ken Loach’s work. The film left me teary-eyed but also livid. The stuff it depicts is real and frustrating beyond words. There’s a Kafka-esque spiral of bureaucracy and incompetency that destroys the lives of good, honest people who deserve better.

Stuff I’ve been reading

I mostly carried on reading The Blizzard while I was in New Zealand. I didn’t finish it there as I’d hope but did finish it in the following week.

I read the free Pursuit of Hoppyness while in pubs and bars around Wellington which was excellent.

I also read a geological assessment of Tolkien’s LOTR maps which was fun because science > magic.

For such a busy month that feels like a very short list of stuff. It’s just because I spent half the month away. September should be interesting.
